HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a nationally recognised unit of competency designed for people who may be required to provide CPR in a community, workplace or emergency situation.
This course provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to recognise an emergency, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use an automated external defibrillator and communicate important incident information.

Blended Delivery
Students complete the required knowledge questions online before attending Shield Education for practical training and assessment.
The blended option allows students to complete the theory component at a suitable time before attending the shorter, hands-on practical session.
All students must successfully complete both the knowledge and practical assessment requirements before a Statement of Attainment can be issued.
Course duration
The total time required will depend on the delivery method and the student’s existing knowledge, skills and experience.
Face-to-face courses may take approximately 2 to 3 hours.
For blended delivery, students complete the online knowledge questions before attending the scheduled practical training and assessment session.
What will you learn?

Students will be assessed through a combination of:

Scenario-based assessments

Students must demonstrate all required skills and knowledge to the standard specified in the nationally recognised unit of competency.
Entry requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements for HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
Students must:
Be at least 14 years of age
Have the language, literacy and numeracy skills required to understand course instructions and complete the assessments
Provide valid photo identification
Provide their Unique Student Identifier
Have the physical capacity to complete the mandatory practical assessments
Students under 18 years of age must have a completed parent or guardian consent form.
Students aged 14 to 16 may be required to have a parent or guardian present during the class.
Physical assessment requirements
To be assessed as competent, each student must be able to perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
This includes completing the required cycles of chest compressions and rescue breaths.
Students must also perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
Prospective students must therefore be physically able to:
Lower themselves to floor level
Kneel beside an adult resuscitation manikin
Perform uninterrupted CPR for at least two minutes
Perform compressions and rescue breaths
Complete CPR on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface
Undertake relevant manual-handling activities safely
Reasonable support may be provided during training; however, the mandatory assessment requirements cannot be removed or completed by another person.

Important information for blended and night classes
Students attending a blended or night class must complete the online knowledge questions before attending the practical session.
The online link will be provided after enrolment.
Before attending the practical class, students must ensure they have:
Completed and submitted the online knowledge questions
Provided valid photo identification, such as a driver licence or passport
Provided their Unique Student Identifier
Submitted all required enrolment information
Received confirmation of their practical session
Students who have not completed the online component may still be required to complete it before their Statement of Attainment can be issued.
Certificate issuing
A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation will be issued after the student has:
Successfully completed the required knowledge assessments
Successfully completed the practical training and assessments
Submitted all required enrolment and identification documents
Had their Unique Student Identifier successfully verified
Paid all applicable course fees
Certificates for daytime classes may be issued on the same day once all course requirements have been met.
For night classes, certificates will generally be issued by the next business day and may be issued sooner where processing permits.

Is Recognition of Prior Learning available?
Recognition of Prior Learning is not generally offered for this course.
Due to the practical assessment requirements and Australian Resuscitation Council recommendations, students are expected to complete CPR refresher training every 12 months and demonstrate their current CPR skills during the practical assessment.
