The course provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to an emergency, provide appropriate first aid treatment, perform CPR and communicate important incident information.

HLTAID011 includes the requirements of HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Blended Delivery

Students complete the required knowledge questions online before attending Shield Education for practical first aid and CPR training and assessment.

The blended option allows students to complete the theory component at a suitable time before attending a shorter, hands-on practical session.

All students must successfully complete both the knowledge and practical assessment requirements before a Statement of Attainment can be issued.

Course duration

The total time required will depend on the delivery option and the student’s existing knowledge, skills and experience.

For face-to-face delivery, the course may take approximately four hours to complete.

For blended delivery, students complete the online knowledge questions before attending the scheduled practical training and assessment session.

The length of the practical session may vary depending on class numbers, the student’s previous experience and their ability to demonstrate all required skills.

What will you learn?

Entry requirements

There are no formal academic entry requirements for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.

Students must:

• Be at least 14 years of age

• Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to understand course instructions and complete the assessments

• Provide valid photo identification

• Provide a valid Unique Student Identifier

• Have the physical capacity to complete the mandatory practical assessments

Students under 18 years of age must have a completed parent or guardian consent form.

Students aged 14 to 16 may be required to have a parent or guardian present for the duration of the class.

Physical assessment requirements

To be assessed as competent, each student must perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.

Students must also perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

Students must be physically able to:

• Lower themselves to floor level

• Kneel beside an adult resuscitation manikin

• Perform uninterrupted CPR for at least two minutes

• Perform chest compressions and rescue breaths

• Perform CPR on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface

• Demonstrate first aid procedures

• Place a casualty into the recovery position

• Complete required manual-handling activities safely

Reasonable support may be provided during training; however, the mandatory assessment requirements cannot be removed, altered or completed by another person.

Clothing requirements

Students must wear suitable clothing that allows them to safely complete floor-based CPR and first aid activities.

Students are requested to wear pants or shorts and suitable enclosed footwear. Skirts and dresses are not considered appropriate for the practical assessment activities.

Important information for blended and night classes

Students attending a blended or night class must complete and submit the online knowledge questions before attending the practical session.

The online assessment link will be provided after enrolment.

Before attending the practical class, students must ensure they have:

• Completed and submitted the online knowledge questions

• Provided valid photo identification, such as a driver licence or passport

• Provided all required identification documents

• Provided a valid Unique Student Identifier

• Submitted all required enrolment information

• Paid the applicable course fee

• Received confirmation of their practical session

Students who have not completed the online component before attending may be unable to complete all course requirements during their scheduled practical session.

Their Statement of Attainment cannot be issued until all knowledge, practical, enrolment and identification requirements have been successfully completed.

Certificate issuing

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid will be issued after the student has:

• Successfully completed the required knowledge assessments

• Successfully completed the practical training and assessments

• Demonstrated the required first aid and CPR skills

• Submitted all required enrolment and identification documents

• Had their Unique Student Identifier successfully verified

• Paid all applicable course fees

Certificates for daytime classes may be issued on the same day once all course requirements have been met.

For night classes, certificates will generally be issued by the next business day and may be issued sooner where processing permits.
