Numeracy and Literacy
Language, literacy, and numeracy requirements are needed to undertake this course. This is assessed through Shield Education’s pre-enrolment LLN assessment*. Specifically, students would need the ability to:
- Use numeracy skills to perform the required ratio and duration of compressions and breaths
- Communicate effectively by asking questions to clarify instructions and telling another person about First Aid incidents, participate in debriefings
- Read and complete an incident report
*Students who fail the LL&N assessment may still be enrolled to the course if endorsed by the trainer/assessor, and corresponding additional support strategies are in place
**Physical attributes requirements
Each of the units of competency that this strategy applies to specifies that students must, among other things, be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, to be deemed as competent. They also must be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
Students must also be able to perform manual handling tasks safely. Therefore, prospective students need to have the physical attributes to be able to:
- Bring themselves to floor level to perform the above task.
- Perform each of the above tasks uninterrupted for two minutes.
- Have the physical capacity to perform manual handling tasks safely.
